Project White Hart’s mission is to halt the imminent extinction of the irreplaceable English chalk stream wild Atlantic salmon and put them on a path to sustainable, long-term recovery.
It is currently building a coalition of local and national partners, united by a shared vision for thriving chalk stream salmon and safeguarded, resilient habitats.
It is locally led by the Test & Itchen Catchment Management Partnership and Wessex Rivers Trust. Supporting partners and champions so far include: Activist and Angler, Jim Murray MBE – Project White Hart Founder, Angling Trust, Atlantic Salmon Trust, Ben Goldsmith, Blue Marine Foundation, Charles Rangeley Wilson OBE, Catchment Based Approach (CaBA), Environment Agency, Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Hampshire River Keepers Association, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Paul Whitehouse, Robert Plant, Southern Water, Test & Itchen Association.
In its first phase it aims to bring stakeholders, communities, environmental organisations, businesses, funders, regulators and policymakers to the table. It will then set out to conduct a full ‘catchment audit’ for the Test and Itchen watersheds – a complete ecological health check to assess the problems facing wild salmon and define the restoration potential.
If you are a riverkeeper, landowner or other local stakeholder, we want to hear from you during this first phase. We need your local knowledge, experience and observations to help inform the catchment audit process. If you represent a business looking to fund vital environmental restoration work as part of your sustainability strategy, please also get in touch.
If you can help, please get in touch with the Atlantic Salmon Trust at info@atlanticsalmontrust.org to complete a questionnaire and start a conversation.
